MYSL Spring 2012 Registrations

Massac Youth Soccer League (MYSL) is back for the spring season and now accepting registrations.   MARCH 3rd is the absolute deadline for accepting registrations, so please sign-up today.

Eligible ages include players from age 3 to 15 with teams being anticipated to formed within the same age-divisions as in the fall: Under-4, Under-6, Under-8, Under-10, Under-12, and Under-16.  Per US Youth Soccer standards, your "soccer age" is determined as to what age the player was on the Aug 1, 2011 date.  In order to be eligible to play, players must be at least 3 years as of that date.  Likewise a player cannot be older than an age of 15 on the Aug 1, 2011 date.  The age-divisions are also determined based using player ages per that date.

Season is tentatively scheduled to begin in mid to late March with practices.  Practices are conducted in Metropolis during the weeknights.  Games will be typically on Saturday mornings with a possible Friday night or two thrown in.  The majority of games will be conducted at the McCracken County Soccer Complex with some home games for the younger ages being played in Metropolis.  Games will be scheduled into mid-late May.   Note: NO games will be scheduled the weekend prior or after the week of Massac Unit 1's scheduled spring break.

HOW TO REGISTER, there are two ways:

NEW this Spring Season:

(a) Plans are to add academy style practices focusing on soccer fundamentals for all teams & players within MYSL.  These practices will be integrated in addition to your regular team practices for the first few weeks of the season.  This should be a good addition to helping develop MYSL players by formally teaching all the soccer fundamentals and footskill drills.

(b) If player interest exists & the Soccer Board can have a MYSL Travel Team Coordinator step forward, we are interested in offering the formation of travel teams to play in a recreational tournament at the end of May.  Download the informational sheet on this potential offering below:

First Ever Games in Metropolis Played on Oct 1

The first-ever soccer games in Metropolis with a slate of MYSL recreational games were played at Civitan Soccer Fields on October 1.  In years past, Massac/Metropolis teams played their games exclusively in Paducah.  The start of a new local youth soccer league and the playing of select games in Metropolis, turns a new page for soccer in the community.

The following are pictures from that day:

U8:    Eli Quint (5 Goals), Jak Kowalczik and Alex Mescher had 6 saves each.
U10:  Autumn Jeffords, Grace Bazor, Andrew Maurer, Lane Watson, and Matthew Parker.
U16:  The MetroThunder opened play with a tightly contested 1-0 win over McCracken Co #2.  Haley Williams scored the winning goal with less than 3 minutes remaining.  Caroline Thompson played superb as a defensive sweeper, while Emilee Fugate's spectacular performance as goal keeper continually stymied the opposition in the shutout victory.

September 17

The following are goal scorers and great performances as reported by the coaches:
U4:    Trevor Hertter, Matthew Harrington, Callie Belford, Dane Green, and Lucas Henley.

U6:    Libby Conkle, & Jackson Lee.
U8:    Reid Martin, Isaac Hosman, Noah Elliott (great goalie play)
U10:  Andrew Maurer, Grace Bazor, Kara Womack, Matthew Parker, Ansley Bailey, Natalie Rottmann, Taylor Staton, Mason Searcy (good defense), Brooklyn Wentworth (good passing & defense), Brooke Belford, Drew Castleman, and Sam Crockett.
U12:  Anthoney Ford (6 goals), Abby Reames (3 goals), Campbell Neely, Payton Adams (3 goals).

U16:  The MetroThunder played a double-header.  The opening contest had the McCracken Co #1 pulling out a 3-1 win, however several Thunder shots on goal just missed or hit the post.  These close misses could of otherwise easily converted the match into a Massac tie or win.  Haley Williams scored for the Thunder for her 2nd goal of the season.  In the nightcap game, a back and forth struggle ensued with the McCracken Co #2 team.  With the Massac team saddled with tired legs from the earlier game, they were able to fight through to a scoreless tie.  Good midfielder marking by Kyle Lawrence, Grace Bellamey, & Catilyn Easter help kept the opposition at bay in the shutout.

COACHES CORNER: Massac Youth Soccer League (MYSL)

The Weekly Reserved Practice Schedule for the Civitan Soccer Fields in Metropolis:

*********************************************************************************************

What do I need to play soccer?

Pele called soccer the "beautiful game".  Many reasons the sport can be called that including that soccer has minimum equipment needed.  Many first-timers to the sport ask "what do I need" to play.

Here's a basic list for equipment needed for practices: shinguards & (optional but stongly encouraged) soccer ball with your child's name on it.

For games, you'll need: shinguards, soccer socks, team uniform shirt, and preferably dark-colored shorts.  You're good to go!

Other helpful notes    :

*     Soccer cleats are not neccessarily a must-have!  Particularly for younger players we recommend wearing shoes that you may already have at the house AND that are very good to run in.  As players get older and the game gets faster, cleats help with traction and footing.  NOTE: Watch-out for baseball or softball cleats, they can be worn but might need a slight modification.  These many times have a front-toe rubber cleat that can hurt other players in soccer.  If you think you're using baseball/softball cleats, check and cut-off any protrubing cleat on the front-toe if it exists.  Soccer referees are trained and required to check before a game and should send your child back to get it corrected before allowing them to play.  Please avoid such a situation prior to game-day!

*  NO jewerly, necklaces, and hair clips are allowed on the soccer fields.  This is can be a danger to the child wearing and to the other players.  Referees are trained and will check prior to each and every game.  Just don't bring it on the soccer field...we want to keep everyone safe.  NOTE: Soft "scungees" for girls hair are OK, ribbons are NOT.

*  It's good to bring your own water bottle to games & practices.  Unless you like sharing germs, write your child's name on it.  Nothing like taking a guess among 15 or so water bottles as to which ones you are to drink from.

*  Soccer balls come in three different sizes for the different age: U4, U6, & U8 use Size 3, U10 & U12 use Size 4, and U13 and above use size 5.

*  Have fun!

How do I to figure what age division your child will play in?

This is a question that is repeatedly asked during any soccer registration throughout the country.  For affliated US Youth soccer programs, such as the Massac Youth Soccer League (MYSL) or the McCracken Co Youth Soccer Association (MCYSA) who are members of, August 1st is considered the magic cut-off date

The easiest way to figure this all out is to ask the question, "what age was my child on August 1st?".  This becomes what we like to call the child's "soccer age".  Next you need to know how the age-groups are divided for the particular soccer league you're signing up.  For the MYSL, nearly every year it is broken into the following age divisions: Under-6 (U6), Under-8 (U8), Under-10 (U10), Under-12 (U12), and Under 16 (U16).  Take your child's "soccer age" and find the closest age division that their age is still under

For example, if your child was born on April 24, 1999 then on Aug 1, 2009 she was age 10 and will have a "soccer age" also of 10.  This would then place her as a U12 player since she is no longer "Under-10" and too old for that league but is now "Under-12" for that soccer year.

This will apply for the whole soccer year which starts in the Fall and end in the Spring.  A child will retain their "soccer age" for the duration of that soccer year until August 1st rolls around again

One last thing due to insurance requirements, the child MUST be at least 4 years old or older on the previous August 1st date in order to play.

It's actually pretty easy to figure out once you understand how to apply the simple rules above.  Hope this helps.
