Soccer Patriots Dominate, Post First-Ever Win

JR Reinwald (pictured above) was one of many Patriots that continually caused fits for the opponent defenders in Massac's 1st game of the 2011 season.
It was all smiles, high-fives, and congratulations for a Massac soccer team, who achieved its first ever program win Thursday September 1st in LaCenter, KY. The Boys High School team played its first game of the season against Ballard County. a similiar beginning program who are playing their first varsity season. The Soccer Patriots dominated all aspects of the game from start to finish, with a convincing 5-1 victory.
The size, skill, and strength of the Massac squad was prevalent throughout play. The Bombers were constantly having to fend off constant offensive attacks and pressure. Caleb Parker got the honor of being the first Patriot of the season to score with a center strike on goal at the 5:25 mark. Scoring continued for Massac in the first half with JR Reinwald at the 31:26 minute and a Ballard own-goal off of well-placed Patriot throw-in, giving the Patriots the 3-0 lead at halftime.
The Patriot barrage continued in the 2nd half even with Massac rotating the entire bench into the game. Kyle Reinwald played a beautfully long--distance assist to Ben Mescher for a well-played goal. Freshman Derek Lawrence while on a deep left run-out, bent a 25-yarder into the goal that "wowed" the crowd to round-out the Massac scoring for the night. Solid Patriot back defense and goalkeeping continually thwarted nearly all of the Bomber offensive build-up attempts in the convincing win.

Bulldogs Wear Down Patriots
The Soccer Patriots were the victim of a Harrisburg skilled ball-possession strategy in route to a Bulldog 4-1 win on September 9. Harrisburg's disciplined and patient ball control, stretched out and eventually wore down the Massac squad. Though the scoreboard revealed a comfortable victory, there were two goals that the Patriots felt they let get by that would of otherwise made a much tighter match. This included a Bulldog short range tap-in that scooted under the hands of the properly positioned Massac keeeper and a Harrisburg conversion off of a PK from a Massac handball in the box during 2nd half. Ben Mescher from Massac struck gold late in the game with a hard fought dribble penetration and shot pass the Bulldog keeper for the Patriot's lone score.

Soccer Patriots Lose at A-J
Anna-Jonesboro with a record of 7-2 and who is setting the standard for Southern Illinois Class A soccer, put the Patriots back on their heels and thumped the visiting Massac squad, 7-0 on Sept 13. The Patriots were only able to muster four shots on goal and found themselves playing back and defending their half nearly all night. Massac will attempt to re-group and get ready for a re-match with Harrisburg on Thursday Sept 22.

Patriots Show Improved Effort in Harrisburg Loss
The Soccer Patriots coming fresh off the heels of a disappointing effort from their last game with A-J, looked to in part to redeem themselves against Harrisburg on September 22. In a drizzling rain throughout the contest, things initially looked like a bad re-run from the last game. This as the Bulldogs scored twice on Massac defensive breakdowns within the game's first five minutes. However after this disastrous start, things quickly settled down and the match was closely contested between the two teams. After another Bulldog goal in the 2nd half, the Patriots finally hit pay dirt when JR Reinwald converted off of a PK from a Harrisburg handball penalty. As the match progressed, both teams had several near-misses for additional goals, until Harrisburg was able to talley one more time in the dwindling minutes of the game to secure the Bulldog win at 4-1. "Though we're disappointed with the loss and still have many, many things that we need to work on, the effort and conditioning level was much improved over our last game. Those two areas were our primary focus for the boys in practice all this last week leading up to this game.", said Head Coach Marty Painter. The Soccer Patriots are back in action on 5pm Thursday Sept 29 with a match against Community Christian Academy in Paducah.

Soccer Patriots Finish Season with a Win
As with the first game against Ballard, the Massac boys team was able to finish their 2011 season much like it started with a solid team performance and a thrilling win. In the final match of the boys season, pitted the Patriots up against a very capable Marion Wildcat JV squad. Coming off the heels of a superb performance at the goal keeper position at A-J, Caleb Parker was re-inserted into this slot and during the course of the game continued his fine play thwarting repeated Marion offensive assaults. In addition, this line-up change also paid unexpected dividends on offensive side with the Patriots first goal of the game. Kaleb McNichols, who had up to recently played the vast majority of mintues at the keeper position, was temporarily re-positioned in the forward slot and was the unlikely hero at the 30-minute mark when he scored off of a Kyle Reinwald assist pass. Just seconds later off this first score, another one was quickly earned by the Patriots. JR Reinwald was able to gain possession and dribble past a couple of opponent defenders to get the team's second goal to suddenly put Massac up 2-0. After the half, the Wildcats went into a patient possession-type of attack that yielded continual pressure on goal and on the back-line defense. However time after time, Massac was able to defend until the 55-minute when Marion finally got on the board making it 2-1. With the match in jeopardy, Massac was able to conitnue to defend and then make the most of a rare 2nd half attack on goal. At the 71st-minute, JR Reinwald under pressure was able to win possession in the penalty box and score once again for a precious two goal lead with the score at 3-1. With the match's minutes winding down, the Marion JV squad was not quitting and was able to draw closer with another goal with time remaining for a desperate challenge to attempt for a tie. However, Massac was able to fend off the last minute attacks and achieve the hard-fought victory at 3-2. For the game, Massac's Caleb Parker at goal keeper recorded an outstanding double-digit number of saves at 10. "Make no doubt though they were a JV team, this was a good opponent we played today and we had to play our very best to earn the win. Happy for our seniors that they got to go out with a win. We're also glad the season ended on positive note as we continue to build the program", said Head Coach Marty Painter after being drenched with the water bucket from the players after the game. Massac ends the boys program's 2nd season at 2-5-0.
